Wuchteln, oven noodles or Rohrnudeln - Austrian Buchteln have many names. They are often filled with plum jam (Powidl), poppy seeds or curd cheese. However, a homemade jam or vanilla sauce also goes wonderfully with them. We fill them with Powidl ice cream and show you how to bake vegan Buchteln in our baking course.
Grandma Susanne and Grandma Ingrid will guide you through the baking course. Both are part of the Viennese coffee house Vollpension. The basic idea behind Vollpension is quickly explained: where do you get the best cake? That's right, at Grandma's! And at Café Vollpension in Vienna. In grandma's public living room, grandmas and grandpas spoil their guests' grandchildren. At the baking course in Zurich, the two grannies share their lifelong knowledge of baking with you.
Why does the social enterprise Vollpension exist?
A cake-baking senior citizen alone does not have a social impact (although a moist chocolate cake like this can make a big difference...). However, if an elderly person threatened by loneliness gets out of their home through the activity of baking and becomes embedded in a social structure and a support system, makes contact with younger and older new friends, has a task in everyday life and earns something in addition to their insufficient pension - the supposedly simple activity of baking cakes becomes a political statement. Active participation in society instead of loneliness in old age, self-empowerment through a meaningful activity instead of poverty in old age, dialogue between the generations instead of a growing gap between old and young in times of ever-increasing anonymization in everyday urban life.
